This week in 5th grade I introduced how to summarize informational text. They were instructed to write a paragraph about the most important details of their independent reading book to share with a person who has never read that book before. I taught them the gimme 5 hand strategy, where the thumb is who, pointer finger is did what, middle finger is when, ring finger is where, and pinky finger is how. Most of my class used this strategy but others used reading summary strategies they remembered from fourth grade. I love how in fifth grade their isn't only one way to do things. As a teacher I believe in student choice. Student's drive the lessons and the learning, so why shouldn't the have choices?
In science we are setting up our science notebooks. I cannot wait to start learning how to teach science from my class at USF this semester!
In math student's learned a problem solving strategy which is to create a KWPL. At first I thought it was going to be like a traditional KWL chart but it is so much more than that! K is for what you know, W is you want to know, P is your plan (how are you going to solve it?), and L is what you learned.
My goal this week comes from my literacy content coach to dil myself teaching a shared reading lesson. I have done a few last year in second grade so I am excited to use what I learned this year for fifth grade!
Hope your school's off to a great year!
